Why Longtime JRPG Fans Should Check Out ‘Edge of Eternity’

An epic adventure awaits!

There is no doubt that the rise of the JRPG genre in the ‘90s has had a ripple effect throughout the video game industry and we are still seeing those effects today. Edge of Eternity is definitely a product of this revolution and serves as a massive love letter to JRPGs of yore.

Developed by Midgar Studio, a small indie team based in France, publishers SCRYsoft and Dear Villagers will be bringing the game to JRPG fans on the PlayStation 4. The game is also available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and even on Xbox Game Pass.

The game will first be released digitally on the Southeast Asian PlayStation Store on April 5, with a physical edition planned for a Q3 2022 release. The console version will come with all previous updates from the PC version, including the newly added Japanese voice option.

The story takes place In a world torn asunder, as the people of Heryon pursue a desperate war against mysterious invaders. Endless war has plunged the planet into a state where the battle between magic and technology was unleashed to their worst and darkest extremes.

This comes in the form of the Corrosion, an infectious disease that turns humans into mindless zombies. In these desperate times, a young soldier will have to face his destiny and embark on an epic journey that will change the fate of Heryon forever.

In Edge of Eternity, players will wage epic turn-based battles with the main protagonists, Daryon and Selene, on their quest to find a cure to the all-consuming Corrosion in this grand tale of hope and sacrifice.

With the entire world in their hands, players will explore the unique and ethereal world of Heryon and unearth its ancient secrets. Along the way, players will solve quests in multiple ways, making their own choices and facing the consequences of their actions.

The battles of Edge of Eternity take place on hexagon-based grids, with a unique and strategic turn-based combat system. Players will have to use the environment to the fullest and outsmart enemies to inflict massive damage.

Taking a cue from Final Fantasy VII’s Materia system, players will be able to craft gear and upgrade it with powerful crystals to unlock unique combinations of skills and power-ups for each party member.

Accompanying the charismatic and larger-than-life cast of characters as well as the fantastical world they inhabit is a stunning soundtrack with contributions by Yasunori Mitsuda, the composer of Chrono Trigger and Xenoblade Chronicles.
