Visual novels will always hold a special place in the hearts of gamers looking for an engaging story and an escape from the conventional stories that typical video games employ. It's a genre that is able to completely focus on the artistry of storytelling.
If you’re looking for new visual novels to play, Indonesian studio Mushroomallow has been consistently making a name for themselves with varied experiences. So far, Mushroomallow has released three visual novels, each with different themes and motifs.
Their first visual novel and the one that got them started was Edda Cafe, a magical cafe that provides a second chance at life. The game was the winner of the Jury's Honorable Mentions at the Asia Game Awards 2021.
The second visual novel by Mushroomallow is Kohana, which is based on Japanese mythology. Featuring a tale of two friends growing apart and a cast of yokai characters, Kohana was one of the standouts from the Spooktober VN Jam 2021 event.
Mushroomallow’s latest visual novel is Tales of Grumville: A Legendary Pie and A Nameless Statue, a slice of life adventure that takes place in a town filled with anthropomorphic animals.
Tales of Grumville was made in collaboration with Wenderly Games, also known as Jerry Becerril, a solo indie game developer. Becerril is a prolific visual novel developer with a number of games available on itch.io.
This new visual novel has players following the adventures of Audrey, a young mouse who has just moved into Grumville with her father. Audrey believes the small town to be the most boring place on Earth.
As she tries to fight boredom in her small new town, Audrey comes across a mysterious statue whose name has been lost in time, which inadvertently leads to the greatest adventure of her life.
Accompanying Audrey on her journey is Montgomery, a hip-hopping sloth who has dreams of being a rapper online, as well as Rocky, the living turtle statue who seeks to remember who he was and uncover his past.
